Adele teased us with footage of her new song “When We Were Young” in a promo for her “60 Minutes Australia” special yesterday, and now she’s made our Tuesday that much sweeter with a video of the full performance.
Filmed at the iconic Church Studios in London, where she recorded a number of tracks off her new album “25,” the video, directed by Paul Dugdale, features arguably one of the singer’s strongest live performances. Dressed in her signature all-black look, Adele brings the house down with her stirring rendition of the moving ballad, hitting high notes like nobody’s business.
Adele called the song’s co-writer Canadian musician Tobias Jesso Jr. (an incredible performer in his own right) her “new secret weapon” in an article she penned for The Guardian about how he came to be involved in her songwriting process.
“I absolutely loved him; his vibe, his humor, the way he plays piano — so felt, ” Adele said, singing the praises of the 30-year old singer. “The music he makes is so romantic … Im definitely going to work with him again.”
Aside from Jesso’s musical prowess, Adele revealed she was inspired by the experience of acting, for one night, like she was 15 again. She described her vision of “When We Were Young” on Sirius XM Monday.
“It was kind of based on us being older and being at a party, kind of, at this house seeing everyone that you’ve ever fallen out with, everyone that you’ve ever loved, everyone that you’ve never loved,” she told the radio station. “You can’t find the time to be in each other lives and you’re all thrown together at this party when you’re like 50, and it doesn’t matter and you have so much fun and you feel like you’re 15 again. So, that’s the kind of vibe of it, really … My favorite lyric in it is, ‘You look like a movie, you sound like a song / My god, this reminds me of when we were young.'”
Adele may only be 27, but she’s clearly got an old soul.
